Artist Carrie Okemaw
Orange Shirt art submission by Carrie Okemaw who states "When I was creating this piece, I was thinking about my father and my grandmother. My father went to Residential school and my grandmother was in a TB Sanitorium for almost 5 years. She only spoke Cree. When she returned, I remember her always encouraging my relatives to go to school and to get their education. I don't know if she ever really understood what happened during Residential School but I swear I can hear her in a faint memory encouraging education. The floral design is representative of the beautiful beadwork that she created while she was alive. The tipi represents the current home in Treaty 6 where I am currently residing."
